John Buchanan, the coach of Kolkata Knight Riders has been under cynosure, ever since he crooned for a multiple – captain theory, hinting the possible shift of baton from Sourav Ganguly.
Even after few week,s after his proposal of multiple – captain theory; it has caused enough ripples in cricketing experts mind and has been dealt with critical reviews and acclaim even now. Few few former players like Vengsarkar, Mc.Grath and Shane Warne have mounted a huge criticism for the theory but on the other side it has incited positive responses from players like Isanth Sharma, kumar Sangakkara and Mohammad Kaif.
Buchanan gave a strong reprisal, to his critics in a press conference recently stating that, even though there is no denying his debacle as a player; his efforts and success as coach of Australian cricket team, where they won two world cups can never be discounted. Adding that he relished working with Steve Waugh;this made a formidable partnership and raised Australia’s standards.
Buchanan also added that, many has misinterpreted his theory of multiple captains, where only one person will call the shots, in each match, from bowling changes, to field placements, but squad wont posses any fixed captains. He said that, more minds involving in tournament mean more ideas emerging out of the Arsenal
He also compared Twenty 20 to a battle and also said that his favourite book of all time was ‘Art of war’, written by Sun Tzu, some 5000 years back which explains all niceties about how to approach a war.
He explains that, formulated strategies do not often work in dynamic environments and Twenty 20 is such a dynamic and rapidly shifting game, it demanded a unique approach. Structured planning can be decisive, but it can fall in quickly changing environment and flexible and fast thinking can be the only answer.
Buchanan also was quoted saying, to press that, they choose Bloemfontein as a venue, for practise, because of its similarities to Potchefstroom, where under his coaching role, Australia achieved significant success in 2003 world cup and he hoped that they can replicate it, for this edition of IPL as well.
He also reserved few words, on describing the strained relationship, which he shared with Shane Warne, but also expressed his awe on leg spinner candid’s interviews to press, which has astonished him at times.
Now with Buchanan giving a fitting and strong reply, to his critics, one can hope multiple captain theory takes centre stage in field, rather than in press conferences and expert interviews.
