The IPL muscle power

IPL (Indian Premier League) 2nd edition prospects have come under serious doubt after the Karachi terror attack on Srilankan team. Elections schedule announced by election commission which almost overlap with IPL dates announced hasn’t helped cause of IPL either.

If one wonders what can save IPL, nothing but its huge financial muscle power, which no one could raise their doubts about. Experts and media estimate that if 2nd edition of IPL is cancelled or postponed, it would incur potential losses of about 20 billion rupees, which can put a huge hole in business model of IPL.

Worst afflicted parties would be Sony entertainment limited, which has purchased TV rights for a whopping 1 billion dollars along with them sponsorship, advertising and gates receipts in some of the world largest stadiums, would be also affected. IPL is not a national event, and in fact its global event even getting showcased in regions likes South America and North America. Those are regions where cricket have seldom encroached into. Legal problems arising because of contract issues are too much to even give a thought about IPL cancellation

Today MR M.S Chidambaram, union home minster has issued a statement that IPL would go ahead despite election dates and potential clash of matches with poll elections in few cities. It had a different flavour to interview given to him few days back regarding the IPL and requesting to postpone it. IPL indeed has become a global event that it can dictate terms.

Franchise owners have already told the media that there is no question about 2nd edition of this gala tournament being cancelled. Their optimism is quite understandable and indispensable because, even they profits are not expected within this season, many franchise owners expect to break even in this 2nd edition. It will be a huge blow to their business models and plans if IPL is abandoned due to some reasons.

IPL cannot be viewed merely as a sport, but a potential business model and a great economic booster for India even in the time of recession.

Players are the other parties, who would be widely concerned. As IPL has revamped the lives of many lives of local players, who saw their bank accounts accelerate to few lakhs because of IPL. Even international players who got contracts in millions will be seriously afflicted.

Raj Kudra owner of IPL present champions Rajasthan Royals and also one of their principal share holder and celebrity Shilpa Shetty also echoed their opinion that IPL must go , in fact IPl can benefit the country by increasing the security rather than other way around. It’s astounding to see how a 1 year baby (IPL) has risen to such a limelight and muscle power.
