Security issues have thrown a serious question mark over second edition IPL in India
IPL (Indian premier league) 2nd edition is scheduled to be held in a month time from now. It has almost hit the headlines every day even before even a commencement of a single match. Recent terrorist attacks over Srilankan cricket team have only compounded the problems bit more. Perspective of international players over touring to India is not the same after the Mumbai attacks.
Recently (FCCI) Federation of International Cricket Association Chief Tim May, in a interview stated that, all the country boards must send their security consultants before giving any thought of sending their players to IPL, as security of players is a paramount importance which cannot be compromised for any other things.
Mills the head of New Zealanders players’ body also issued similar concern, stating that BCCI which is yet to recognise FCCI or any Players association hasn’t even replied to a letter from FCCI send to it 4 weeks back. Tim May also raised his opinion stating that BCCI, which is running IPL should sit back with Players Association of different countries and address their concerns.
International players who are contracted under IPL, is also having similar concerns. Jacob Oram, New Zealander player who is supposed to participate in IPL along with Muthiah Muralitharan for Chennai super kings also raised security concerns about playing in India, as scenario has changed after Mumbai terror attacks.
Glenn Mc Grath who was supposed to play in Delhi Dare devils has also raised similar concerns and reservations regarding playing in IPL. Even though financial aspects are one which lies to advantage of IPL organizers, security is a quite a serious and sensitive issues which IPl organizers cannot evade them.
Lalith Modi, who has great business acumen recently has reiterated the fact that security would be fool proof, and recent Lahore terror attacks over Srilankan team, would be helpful for them to act with much more care and seriousness rather than acting as a deterrent.
Players sound to have been quite divided over playing in IPL. As new breed of International stars like David Warner, Nathan Bracken sounded quite optimistic playing in this tournament. Brett lee was sounding quite optimistic in his recent interview for playing in IPL, as he had said that, one cannot allow terrorist to dictate terms and it will be a morale booster for terrorist if IPl has to be deprived of its playing ground.
IPL had seen lot of oscillations through both its on – field and off- field controversies, one could only hope that all things settle well, everything occurred is for good, and it act as a perfect launch pad for gala event.
