IPL‘s elections dilemma

IPL (Indian premier League) was all set to unveil its second edition in April 10th of this year. In fact IPL authorities had an ordeal time to find a window, where one can fit this golden marvel, so that to accommodate most of its contract International players. Even then, national team players from countries like England, Australia, and South Africa will not be available for whole tournament.

After all these drama, now Indian government has announced Lok Sabha elections which are going to be held in 5 phases, from April 13 to May 16. Fuming oil to fire Home minster have even asked IPL authorities yesterday to reconsider the schedule of IPL, as the demand for security forces during those periods will not match supply. If it’s a national tournament, one can give a thought about it, but being an international fiesta, it’s impossible to think another time period to stage this gala event.

IPl chairman lalith Modi, was quick to retaliate to home ministers request stating that, such a factor can be completely ruled out. But also stated that they can reschedule the matches played in venue, in day when it hosts its lok sabha election also.

For example match between Bangalore royal challengers and Kolkata Knight Riders was scheduled to be held in May 13 at Kolkata, but after the announcement of Lok Sabah dates which exactly collide with IPl matches it’s very much likely that date might be shifted.

Even BCCi secretary said to press that they IPL dates are only as tentative announcements, as they know Lok sabha elections are also imminent in those same time period. IPL CEO Sundara Raman was furious stating, that why the whole of India has to come to standstill because of Lok sabha elections which is going to be held in some place.

In fact security is one of the pivotal agenda in this year’s IPl, after Mumbai attacks, and yesterday attack on Srilankan Cricket team. But problem is number of para – Military forces employed at present, which is quite less to accommodate both a cricket match and Lok sabha elections, as the guards wont also won’t get proper rest to perform their duties.

But it’s highly unlikely to see a reschedule of all the matches as asked by home minster, given the money involved in IPl. The tournament officials even can go to extent of hiring private security guards from neighbouring countries or inside to host IPL.

After the cancellation of IPl champions’ trophy, it would be heartbreak for a cricket fan to hear that IPL second edition also would be cancelled. So let’s hope for best with keeping fingers crossed
