IPL officials are facing a torrid time, with whatever moves they forge ahead with, as recently Bombay High court has blocked the move, by IPL authorities to remove ,Sony from its official broadcaster tag, and enter into a direct broadcasting deal with World Sports Group (WSG), the television rights partner of the tournament.
Plenty of altercations have boiled down between Sony and IPL recently. There are even speculations ,that Sony is not happy with revised dates and also some of the venues being considered for the tournament.
It was said, that BCCI issued termination of contract of Sony broadcasters citing breach of their contract as a reason in Saturday and entered into a contract directly with WSG. But Sony officials issued an injunction, in Bombay High Court, stating that, they have to proceed with any termination of contract in a legal working day before 5 PM and IPL officials have intentionally forged ahead with such move, so that they cannot intervene and have asked high court to block the move of IPL officials with WSG officials.
It is rumoured, that IPL authorities’ ties with Sony became sour, after the resignation of Kunal Dasgupta as CEO of Sony entertainment Ltd. It was further aggravated, when IPL lost out 31.6 million US $, because of a battle between Sony and Big TV a Direct – To – home provider.
IPL officials were unavailable for any comment about the issue. Rohit Gupta president of Network sales at Multi Screen media Ltd, which hold the broadcasting rights under Sony umbrella, also said it would be inappropriate to comment on this issue at this point.
It’s a well known fact that, IPL bought the broadcasting rights for whopping 1.01 Billion US dollars last year, at the time when lot of companies were unsure and sceptical about the tournament success.
Sony even recently announced that few of the slots for associate sponsorship is still wide open and it has already stroked a deal with companies like Hyundai, Vodafone, Max New York, Coca – Cola.
Sony has said to have already shown a surety of 120 crore rupees, owing to their deal, along with depositing 90 crores as per agreements of their contract with IPL.
Top management of WSG, a sports management company sounded optimistic stating that they would be able to carry out the rights on their own.
IPL list of controversies and altercations sounds to be a never ending hymn, which could manage much more hype for this glamorous tournament.
