IPL has been the talk of cricket fraternity for past one month, whether for good reason or bad reasons. We will delve further, what do cricket celebrities and officials opine about staging of this billion dollar event.
Former England coach, Duncan Fletcher states that, IPL should be abandoned, as security has aggravated in sub- continent after terrorist attacks on Pakistan, it’s quite obvious one cannot be assured about the security of IPL live.
Kevin Pietersen, even though cynic about security, for IPL states, that IPL is a huge boost for cricket in general and it can help English players to learn tricks, which can help them perform better in International Cricket for their country.
Pakistan Cricket board, head Nasim Ashraf stated that if one cannot be sure of security of Pakistan, it applies to India also and hence IPL should be postponed owing to security reasons.
Newzealand Players Association Health Mills, feel that unless they are not involved in security arrangements of IPL, they cannot get credibility and cannot assure sending their players in IPL.
Srilankan Cricket board official, Anil Ranatunga, has said that they would review the security before deciding on their players, as the players come under their legal contracts. Sri lankan board is indeed in extra pressure after the Lahore terror attacks, so they cannot afford to take chances this time.
Million dollar baby Andrew Flintoff, who is scheduled to play for Chennai Super Kings sounded optimistic about his recovery of Injury, as well playing in IPL. He said that security would be adequate and he was in touch with his franchise, which sounds positive about security issues.
Indian International players like Virender Shewag and Sourav Ganguly have strongly backed their country, stating that it is pretty much safe, for International players to come and play IPL. In fact they don’t have any issues in participating IPL.
Recently BCCI former secretary, Niranjan Shah, has expressed his disgust stating that IPL officials are responsible for security of the tournament, and government is needlessly encroaching into issue ,so that their election campaigns doesn’t get affected.
According to Lalith Modi, the chairman of IPL, tournament is provided with security based on code of ICC , so there is no need to worry about security issues and also participation of Players association in providing security to teams in venue, as its designed to be fool proof.
Everyone has their version and opinion about IPL, one can only hope clouds clear away for rain of cricket to flood hearts and souls of cricket lovers
